PCB’s campaign for national coach is a flop
Last Updated : 2011/9/27

After the lukewarm response, the PCB manufacturer to pick the most appropriate coach may now decide to make direct contact with the world’s well-known coaches, sources told Dawn.

A decision in this regard will be taken in the next meeting of the four-member PCB committee constituted to select the coach after Waqar Younis stepped down as coach following the recently-concluded tour to Zimbabwe.

PCB manufacturer committee will meet in Karachi on Sept 29 to discuss the qualification of the candidates before taking any further decision in this regard.

Sources said that nine foreign PCB manufacturer applied for the post, sending their CVs to the committee comprising Intikhab Alam (chairman), Zaheer Abbas, Col. (r) Naushad Ali and consultant Ramiz Raja.

Though response from local coaches seems encouraging as some 30 are lined up, most of them hold no significant coaching experience, sources added.

In 2007, a similar PCB manufacturer  consisting of Mudassar Nazar and Zakir Khan had hired former Australian Test fast bowler Geoff Lawson as Pakistan’s national coach during the tenure of Dr Nasim Ashraf as PCB chief.

At that time, Australia’s former Test player Dav Whatmore — a coach with good reputation in the cricketing world — was among the candidates for Pakistan team’s coaching but he was ignored by the committee.

However, this time no big name, as far as coaching skills is concerned, showed the interest in applying for the demanding job of Pakistan cricket coach, perhaps also due to the current security situation in the country.

There is a possibility that Pakistan team will be without a head coach during their coming series against Sri Lanka, starting in the UAE next month.

Either Aaqib Javed or Ijaz Ahmed may be appointed head coach for the said series temporarily, as the committee is in no hurry to take the decision.
